The Kentucky governor proclaimed September 10th as Protect Your Groundwater Day.  Governor Beshear is urging citizens to help protect our resources from pollution and to practice water conservation.  Approximately two million Kentuckians rely on groundwater as their source of drinking water.  Lack of well maintenance was cited as the number one complaint with private wells according to the Division of Water.  The Groundwater Protection Program, Wellhead Protection Program, and Drillers Certification Program are all programs managed by the Division of Water to help protect groundwater in the Commonwealth.

Wells located on industrial properties may be subject to additional withdrawal permit requirements.  Specifically, water withdrawal permitting is required for wells used to pull an average of 10,000 gallons per day or more.  Withdrawal permits are necessary to manage available water resources.  Exemptions from this type of permitting include water used for: domestic purposes, irrigation, underground injection, and production of steam generating plants.
