History

Scott R. Smith founded SMG in 1989 to focus on environmental management issues facing industry and business in the US and Canada. At that time, Scott had been solving problems from water to air issues, from Texas to Ontario, for more than 15 years. Over time we have added industrial hygiene, health & safety services to help our clients address workplace issues. Along the way, we translated our ability to connect with government, both on the regulatory side and in the legislative arena, to build a government services practice. And as energy has become so important to us all, we have learned to solve problems and find practical, environmentally sound solutions to the increasing need for energy.

In the process of evolving, we have worked in Kentucky and the surrounding states on a frequent basis. We have also worked in every Canadian Province, over 35 states, Mexico and several Central American countries, in addition to Taiwan and Indonesia.

We became a woman owned company in 2004, when Scott Smith left SMG to become the Chief of Staff for Kentucky’s Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet. Through that experience, he solidified his relationship with the regulatory community in Kentucky and surrounding states, and at EPA Region IV and EPA headquarters. Since Scott’s return to SMG in 2006, he has focused on energy and water projects and government relations.

SMG operates under the direction of its President, Sara G. Smith and Clayton T. Whitney, Vice President. Sara Smith is an attorney with over 25 years experience, 18 of which have been with SMG. She helps develop policy for environmental and energy issues in addition to her work with SMG. Clay Whitney has over 25 years experience in environmental management and maintains Masters Level certification as a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager. Clay has developed a comprehensive compliance practice and routinely assists companies in becoming certified under ISO 14001.
