On March 3, 2014, the United States Environmental Protection Agency issued new regulations to limit sulfur emission from automobiles, including lowering the sulfur content in gasoline by 60 percent beginning in 2017.

The American Petroleum Institute (API), says the standards will raise gas prices while providing little environmental gain.  API also added that the 2017 deadline for meeting the standards could cause an interruption in supply.  EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy said the changes would only add only a penny per gallon of gas, while API says it will hike gas prices by 6-9 cents per gallon.

The new EPA emission standards will be phased in for model years 2017-2025.
