The authors of the TSCA reform bill (S 697) are confident that it will hit the Senate floor this year and could be on the president’s desk by the end of the year. The House overwhelmingly approved its own TSCA bill in June of this year. However, in the Senate there has been an absence of any action on the TSCA bill in August. The authors of the bill Tom Udall (D-New Mexico) and David Vitter (R-Louisiana) rejected the idea that the Senate’s failure to take action on the bill before the recess was a setback. Phil Klein, executive vice president of legislative and public affairs at the Consumer Specialty Products Association, stated “with over half of the Senate co-sponsoring the bill we have no reason to doubt TSCA modernization will happen this year.” For now we will cross our fingers and hope this very outdated act gets the serious update it needs!
