The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is offering $2 million in funding for rebates to help public and private construction equipment owners replace or retrofit older nonroad diesel construction engines. Rebates will be offered under The National Clean Diesel Rebate Program as part of the Diesel Emission Reduction Act (DERA) of 2010, which aims to achieve significant reductions in diesel emissions since older diesel engines emit large amounts of pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM).  All government entities are eligible as well as private entities that operate nonroad construction equipment under a contract or lease with a public entity. Applicants have two options for their nonroad construction engines : They can either retrofit with diesel particulate filters or replace the old engine with new Tier 2 or Tier 3 diesel engines. Applicants can submit only one Rebate Application for upto five eligible nonroad construction equipment engines for a total maximum of $120,000  in rebate funding. EPA started accepting applications from November 20, 2013 and will continue to do so till January 15, 2014. Beneficiaries will be selected by a random draw and the rebates will be awarded in February 2014. The EPA will be holding a webinar to explain the program on Dec. 9 from 1 to 2 p.m. (EST).
