The goal of pretreatment is to control pollutants from industrial users which may pass through or interfere with wastewater treatment processes or which may contaminate sewage sludge.  It sounds simple enough, but pretreatment can be a complicated and time-consuming issue for municipalities and industries alike.  That’s where the expertise of SMG comes in. SMG can help municipalities and industries with the following:

  • Annual and Semi-Annual Pretreatment reports are needed to fulfill the requirements of KPDES permits.  SMG works with municipalities to develop efficient and streamlined ways to prepare these reports.
  • Local Limits Calculations are required under new KPDES permit conditions to be reevaluated within 30 days of changes to a KPDES permit.  Findings are to be submitted within 45 days.  In addition, SMG can help when an Industrial User wants to relocate and needs a reallocation of your local limits.
  • Industrial User Control Mechanisms (permits) need to be kept up-to-date with regulatory requirements or when a new Industrial User needs a permit.  SMG has a knowledgeable staff that can help with these issues. Many are former regulators.
  • Sewer User Ordinances / Enforcement Response Plans need to be updated as circumstances change and rules, like the Pretreatment Streamlining Rule, are updated.  SMG can work with all levels of government to make these updates and changes.
  • Inspections can identify unexpected program deficiencies.  SMG can work collaboratively to fix the deficiencies and satisfy regulatory requirements.
