It’s Holiday decorating time once again. It is estimated this year Americans will spend six billion dollars on Christmas decorations alone according to the Nation Retail Federation. If you have decorated or are planning to decorate for the holidays this year, please take a moment to review some of these Holiday Decoration Safety tips published by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
- A fresh tree will stay greener longer and is less of a fire hazard than a dry tree.
- Many artificial trees are fire resistant. Check for a statement specifying this protection when purchasing a tree.
- When choosing where to put your tree, keep it away from radiators, fireplaces and other heat sources. Do not block any doorways or exits with your tree.
- Be aware that artificial snow sprays can be a lung irritant. Please read the instructions carefully and follow directions.
- Whether you are decorating indoors or out, use only lights that have been tested for safety.
- Be sure to check each set of lights for any damage such as frayed or bare wires and discard or repair these lights before using them.
- Use no more than three sets of lights per single extension cord.
- Make an emergency plan to use if a fire were to break out in the home. See that each family member knows what to do and practice the plan.
- Be sure to check your smoke detectors monthly.
