Dr. Jim Cobb, a friend and colleague, retired last month as the State Geologist and Director of the Kentucky Geological Survey after 34 years of service at UK.  Jim was our 12th state geologist fourth to serve since the Survey was transferred to UK in 1948. He was state geologist from 1999 to 2014.  Dr. Cobb was instrumental in bringing geology for Kentuckians into the 21st Century.  Under his tenure, the Survey brought our maps to life on their website and provides access to the state geological information for free.   An exchange program with Chinese scientists was also started under Dr. Cobb to work on seismic research and monitoring.   During this time he also served as President of the Association of American State Geologist among other many accomplishments. We at SMG will miss Dr. Cobb, but look forward to new leadership.  The University of Kentucky has posted the position for the 13th State Geologist.  Applications are due by November 16, 2014.  (http://kgs.uky.edu/StateGeologist/ )

Thanks Jim for being an Ambassador for Kentucky and Geology.
